A lakeside town on the railway

Järvenpää lies on the shore of Lake Tuusula, north of Kerava, and is best known for Ainola, the home of the composer Jean Sibelius, which is now a museum. The town has two railway stations: Järvenpää in the centre and Haarajoki on the direct line to Lahti.

Around the centre there are many apartment buildings of different ages, owned by housing companies (taloyhtiö). Further out, terraced and detached houses become more common, and newer residential areas have been built around Haarajoki station.

Flats in the centre: towel warmers, showers and appliances

In apartment buildings, typical jobs are bathroom upgrades and appliance connections. A water-heated towel warmer connects to the building's heating or hot water pipes, so in a housing company it is always agreed with the property manager (isännöitsijä) first. An electric towel warmer that needs hard-wiring is a job for an electrician and is arranged separately.

A shower screen is a simple way to keep the splashes in the shower area; the fixings are sealed, so the waterproofing under the tiles isn't damaged. Detached houses near the lake and in Haarajoki

In a detached house, the owner is responsible for all the pipework and the heating system. Older houses may have water pipes and radiators from several decades. If the original pipes keep leaking, water pipe replacement or radiator pipework renewal is often more sensible than repeated repairs, and the work is best timed with other renovations.

If your outdoor tap isn't frost-proof, shut off its supply from inside and drain it before winter. A frost crack often only shows in spring, when water can run inside the wall.
