Three centres and a lake

Tuusula lies just north of Vantaa, and roughly half of its residents live in and around Hyrylä, the municipal centre. The other main centres are Jokela, on the main railway line, and Kellokoski, which grew up around an old ironworks. In between are residential areas and villages such as Riihikallio, Ruotsinkylä, Lahela and Sula.

Lake Tuusula, which Tuusula shares with Järvenpää, is known for the artists' community that lived along its shore road (Rantatie) in the early 1900s; the painter Pekka Halonen's studio home, Halosenniemi, is now a museum. Around the lake there are old villas as well as newer detached houses.

Building types vary a lot, so tell us in your quote request what kind of home it is and roughly how old the building is.

New homes in Rykmentinpuisto

Rykmentinpuisto is a new residential area built on a former garrison site next to Hyrylä, and it hosted the Finnish Housing Fair (Asuntomessut) in 2020. Its apartment buildings, terraced houses and detached houses are recent, so the pipework is modern and appliance connections are usually already in place.

Typical jobs are appliance connections and bathroom additions. Dishwasher installation to existing connections costs €125.50, and a shower screen keeps the splashes in the shower area of an open bathroom. The fixing holes are sealed, so the waterproofing under the tiles is not damaged.

In a newly completed building, changes made soon after completion may affect the builder's responsibility for defects. Before moving pipes or adding connections, check with the property manager (isännöitsijä) of your housing company (taloyhtiö). Connecting an appliance to existing connections is normally fine.

Older houses in Hyrylä, Jokela and Kellokoski

Alongside the new areas, Tuusula has plenty of older terraced and detached houses. In a terraced house owned by a housing company, the company is responsible for the shared pipes, and moving or adding fixtures needs a renovation notice (muutostyöilmoitus); our renovation notice guide explains the process.

In an older detached house, the owner is responsible for all the pipework and the heating. If the original water pipes have started to leak, water pipe replacement is often more sensible than repeated repairs. Radiators that leak or no longer heat evenly can be replaced one at a time through radiator installation.

Some properties outside the centres have a private well (kaivo) or treat their wastewater on site. If yours does, mention it when you book, as the water is then shut off and restored through the house's own pump.
