Shower screen installation for your bathroom

A shower screen keeps the water in the shower area and the rest of the bathroom floor drier. We fix shower screens and shower enclosures firmly to tiled walls and seal every fixing hole, so that water cannot get into the wall structure through the holes.

How a shower screen is installed

First, we plan where the shower screen goes. It is positioned so that the water stays on the floor drain side and the door or pivoting glass panel can move without obstruction. We also check whether there are pipes or electrical cables behind the spot to be drilled.

The tiles are drilled with a tile drill bit, and the holes are sealed with a sealant suitable for wet rooms before the fixings go in. Then the wall profiles and glass panels are installed, the screen is set plumb and the doors are checked. The joint between the profile and the tiles is finished according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A fixed glass panel without a door, known as a walk-in screen, is usually braced with a support bar to the wall or ceiling. It is worth deciding in advance where the bar will be fixed, as it also needs drilling.

You can buy the shower screen yourself. Measure the installation spot carefully before ordering: the width, the height and the distance to things such as a window, radiator or toilet. During the same visit, we can also replace the shower mixer or install a towel warmer.

Drill holes and waterproofing

Under the tiles there is a waterproofing layer that stops moisture getting into the wall structure. Every hole drilled through a tile is a potential leak point, so we only drill as many holes as needed and seal every fixing.

Repairing or renewing the waterproofing is not part of shower screen installation. If the grout is cracked, tiles are loose or you suspect moisture damage, have the situation checked and repaired by a wet-room specialist before installation.

A shower screen will not correct the fall of the floor either. The bottom edge of a glass screen is not usually watertight against the floor, so the floor itself must direct the water to the drain. If the bathroom has just been renovated, ask the contractor who did the work or your housing company (taloyhtiö) whether there are places in the walls that should not be drilled.

What affects the price

Shower screen installation is priced as a quote, because models and bathrooms vary a lot. A fixed glass panel is usually the quickest to install, while a shower enclosure with doors needs more measuring and adjustment. You can claim the household tax credit (kotitalousvähennys) for the labour part, provided the work is not the housing company's responsibility – see our household tax credit guide.

If you send a photo of the shower area and the details of the model you have chosen with your quote request, the price will be more accurate. The price depends on things such as:

  • the type of screen: fixed glass panel, pivoting screen or shower enclosure with doors
  • the number of parts and fixing points, and how the support bar is fixed
  • the size and weight of the glass panels
  • the wall surface, such as ceramic tiles, natural stone or wet-room wall panels
  • removing an old shower screen or shower curtain rail

After installation

Let the sealant cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before using the shower – often about 24 hours. If you squeegee the glass after showering and clean the profiles regularly, less limescale builds up on the hinges and seals.

Toughened safety glass stands up well to everyday use, but its edges are the most vulnerable point, so avoid knocking them. If the door starts to drag over time, adjusting the hinges usually fixes it. If the sealant joint along a profile comes loose or darkens, it is worth renewing before water gets behind it.

What the job includes

  • Measuring the installation spot and planning the fixing points
  • Drilling the tiles with a tile drill bit
  • Sealing the fixing holes with a wet-room sealant
  • Installing the wall profiles and glass panels
  • Adjusting the doors and hinges
  • Checking operation and watertightness

Charged separately / good to know

  • Repairing or renewing waterproofing is separate specialist work
  • Removal and disposal of an old shower screen is agreed separately
  • Extra fixings and materials not supplied with the shower screen
  • Priced as a quote depending on the model and the site

How to prepare

  1. Measure the width and depth of the shower area and check that a window, radiator or towel warmer is not in the way of the screen.
  2. Keep the shower screen in its packaging until installation and check that all the parts are included.
  3. Clear the shower area and its shelves.
  4. Tell us in advance if you know of pipes or electrical cables running inside the wall.
  5. Be prepared not to use the shower until the sealant has cured.

Send a photo of the shower area and tell us what kind of shower screen you are getting. The product page or installation instructions for the model help us assess the job.

  2. Quote and time

You receive the price as a quote, and the installation time is agreed once the shower screen has been delivered.

  3. Installation

The fixing points are measured, the tiles are drilled and the holes are sealed before the screen is fixed.

  4. Adjustment and check

The glass panels and doors are adjusted, and we go through how everything works with you before the job is finished.

FAQ · Shower screen

Frequently asked questions

How much does shower screen installation cost?

Shower screen installation is priced as a quote, because the amount of work depends on the model and the bathroom. A single fixed glass panel is a smaller job than a shower enclosure with doors. If you send a photo of the installation spot and the details of the model you have chosen, you will get a more accurate price. The price is given including VAT (ALV).

Can a shower screen be installed without drilling?

Most shower screens are fixed with screws, so a few holes are drilled in the tiles. Some models have adhesive fixings, but whether they are suitable depends on the manufacturer's instructions and the wall surface. When holes are drilled, they are sealed with a wet-room sealant so that water cannot get behind the waterproofing.

Can I buy the shower screen myself?

Yes. You can choose the shower screen yourself, and we will install it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Before ordering, measure the installation spot carefully and check that the door opens in the right direction. If you want to double-check the measurements, send a photo of the shower area and the details of the chosen model before you order.

Do you also repair the waterproofing in the shower area?

No. Repairing and renewing waterproofing is specialist work of its own and is not part of shower screen installation. If you suspect moisture has got into the structure – for example, the grout is cracked or tiles are loose – have the situation checked before installation. In a housing company, also report your concern to the property manager (isännöitsijä) or the maintenance company (huoltoyhtiö).

Do I need to tell the housing company about a shower screen installation?

Installing a shower screen in a finished bathroom is usually a minor alteration, but the practice varies between housing companies. Because holes are drilled in wet-room tiles, some housing companies want a renovation notice (muutostyöilmoitus) for it. Check with your property manager before installation. A short description of the work and who is doing it is usually enough for the notice. Our guide to the renovation notice explains what to include.
